You always wanted to be a good mom, actually a great mom? Me too.
It is not easy to explain what ‘great’ means. It’s more like a happy feeling.
But let me try to explain ‘great’ in my own way. To me being a great mom means a loving, interested, curious and nurturing parent.
Having a mutually respectful relationship with my daughter, the kind of relationship I wish I had had with my mom. One that doesn’t require the kid to fill a need or a void in the adult.
Now the fact that I want to be a great mom, doesn’t mean that I always am a good mom. I am not perfect. It means that I have my intention. It means that when I fall off the horse I can get back on it because I know where I am heading… Knowing that, by itself, gives me a feeling of empowerment.
So, that brings me to ask you this: what do you think the word ’empowerment’ means?
The first time I heard the word ’empowered,’ I was taken aback. It sounded negative. It reminded me of words like controlling, dominating, suppressing used in the pre-Industrial society. Nothing to do with wanting to be a great mom.
However, I now know what ‘being empowered’ means, to me. …For example, I take control over my own thoughts, feelings, and intentions. As a result that helps me to deal more effectively with irritation, anger or frustration.
I don’t need to yell when I’m irritated or lash out when I’m frustrated. Which gives me more space to be a loving and curious woman, which helps me to focus on being a great mom etc.
